Indian tech support strikes again!

August 27, 2008 on 9:42 pm | In Kumara | | itamaram

So I’ve installed the ‘F-Secure’ Antivirus software. It sucked in terms of speed and detection. Being fed up with the amount of fail, the following Email conversation between me and their tech support took place.

Me (First Email):

I have just downloaded and installed the 2008 anti-virus trial and I am trying to decide whether or not I am interested in purchasing a license. However, I’ve encountered a certain difficulty.
After updating the product, I have started a full system check, which is taking horribly long. 40,000 files took almost an hour. Which might be ok for a machine of smaller hard drive, but I have over 3TB of memory, and to be honest am not interested in my antivirus scanner running for days on end. So clearly limiting the search area is the correct thing to do, but are there any other software settings I should set in order to speed up the scan?

I would like to state my computer is not slow, I have a 3.0GB quadcore, with 4GB of ram, most of which is free. The scan is evidently taking a large share of my computers resources as it slows it down considerably.

Although I am currently only using the trial, I am interested in purchasing the software as it had been highly ranked by some third party websites, I am not however, interested in buying a software which takes longer than a couple of hours to complete a scan.

Tech Response

<Some more instructions>

Best regards,
Puravin

So the solution to my problem is to uninstall a program I don’t have from a folder it is not installed in, using some external tool. Also, the tech is indian. *shudder*

So I’ve responded.

Me (Second Email)

Dear Tech Support

1) I do not have F-Secure internet security installed. I have F-Secure anti-virus installed.
2) I did not install it in the default directory. It is a bit late now to change it.
3) I fail to see how uninstalling the product would make it go faster.

Itamar

The literate and intelligent tech support had quickly retorted with the following:

Tech Response (second try)

Should have came up with that myself…
