Movies: Surrogates
November 11, 2009 on 8:06 pm | In Reviews | | BalinorWent and saw Surrogates Tuesday (10/11/2009) evening with Alex Mason and Steve Biggins. Was looking forward to this movie as people of my outlook then to be people sitting on a comfy chair typing into a computer and being something more than their real life selves can be. Or maybe that’s just me. I can, however, say that this movie’s premise would appeal to all your WoW players out there and anyone that ever has ever donned an avatar persona. The trailer to the movie can be seen here.
Pros:
Interesting premise of exploring people’s fears of going outside
Properly paced story
Decent action
Cons:
Story was interesting but predictable and fell short
The premise of the story is what made me part with my money to see it on the big screen. That and the trailer for it make it look like it was going to be a really good sci fi action thriller movie. What made it disappointing was it seems like this movie was just another hollywood action movie template movie. What I mean by that is it seems like they must include, random acts of destruction, car chases, guns, and explosions. What was missing though was girls in little clothing although it’s not to say the females in the movie wasn’t bad looking. Of course though this being a Hollywood action movie, it can’t all be action….anymore. Hollywood action movies nowadays must include some sort of love story and if the main actor is old enough, include some sort child that was lost. That’s all fine, but where it falls short is when they ‘insert emotional scene here’ and’ insert action here’. How they made it is exact how Steve Biggins says it is, “an action movie with not enough action”.
The movie would of been better if they made it the psychological thriller template. Through the movie there was that unknown element of who’s real which they didn’t capitalise on. Characters seem to not matter as well. There’s no real build up, even the ones that seem important. When you find out the reason for those characters, it was all unsurprising. In fact, I think if they built those characters up more but following the psychology thriller line, the movie would of been more interesting.
All in all, it wasn’t bad. I do recommend you seeing it because it does explore enough of the premise to make it worth while. Just don’t have high expectations like I did. Go into it as you’re going to watch another action movie and you’ll be fine.
