DarkSentinel was here

I went to the Planar Chaos prerelease today with Simon and Josh.

Jeremy’s R/G 40 card limited deck:

  • 8x Mountain
  • 7x Forest
  • (TS)
  • Goblin Skycutter
  • Lightning Axe
  • Firemaw Kavu
  • Coal Stoker
  • Browbeat
  • Bogardan Rager
  • Ghitu Firebreathing
  • (PC)
  • 2x Brute Force
  • Pyrohemia
  • Needlepeak Spider
  • Dead // Gone
  • Dust Corona
  • (TS)
  • Durkwood Baloth
  • Krosan Cloudscraper
  • Sporesower Thallid
  • Penumbra Spider
  • Æther Web
  • Gemhide Sliver
  • (PC)
  • Essence Warden
  • Giant Dustwasp
  • Utopia Vow
  • 2 Uktabi Drake
  • Evolution Charm

People seem to pick Blue/Black. I don’t know why, might be because they get flashy rares or something and build their entire decks around it, but they tend to be unable to support it with enough removal. Also nobody was running hard counterspells, regardless of whether they got them or not. For those who don’t know I went 4/1

  2. Well, if your card pool doesn’t seem to be working out, it’s better to drop and enter another flight.

    First pool: 0-3 (poor removal)
Second pool: 4-1 (absolutely rigged. Beat my round 3 opponent in 6 turns)

    My deck (the good one):

    7 Plains
    7 Mountains
    1 Island
    1 Calciform pools
    1 Terramorphic Expanse
    -
    1 Magus of the scroll
    1 Keldon Marauders
    1 Mogg War Marshal
    1 Revered Dead
    1 Aven Riftwatcher
    1 Basalt Gargoyle
    1 Cloudchaser Kestrel
    1 Prodigial Sorcerer
    2 Stonecloaker
    1 Uthden Troll
    1 Needlepeak Spider
    1 Shade of Trokair
    1 Castle Raptors
    -
    2 Brute Force
    1 Dust Corona
    1 Momentary Blink
    1 Temporal Isolation
    2 Dead//Gone
    1 Saltblast
    1 Chromatic Star

  3. Our flight started at 3pm on the sunday. There was no other flights to go on besides the draft and due to me always doing poorly in limited and not wanting to fork out another $35 (as we’ve hired a mini van down which we under calculated the price of)

  4. The bastards bumped me up a table after my 4th round loss (no competitive on sunday either, so had to face the really good players).
Didn’t have enough time to join Balinor’s flight. Will post decklist later.

  5. Well yeah, I came off a 4th round loss and got paired with an unbeaten guy in the last round. It probably happens alot.

  6. Happens when there are more than 32 people.

    Deck list:
    Akroma, Angel of Fury
    Rift Bolt
    Aspect of Mongoose
    Reiterate
    Groundbreaker
    Nantuko Shaman
    Thornscape Battlemage
    Needlepeak Spider
    Keldon Halberdier
    Chameleon Blur
    Healing Leaves
    Seal of Primordium
    Sporesower Thallid
    Dead // Gone
    Essence Warden
    Clockwork Hydra
    Evolution Charm
    Fury Charm
    Might of Old Krosa
    Skirk Shaman x2
    Jaya Ballard, Taskmage
    Terramorphic Expanse
    Forest x8
    Mountain x8

    Brief analysis:
Akroma is obviously very good, people don’t treat morph creatures seriously enough. She ate dragons and beat people around the head. Unfortunately her abilities don’t synergise well, if you morph her you can’t use firebreathing in the same turn and her ‘cannot be countered’ is useless; if you hardcast her, her morph ability is useless and she sits there for a turn.
Reiterate is fun, I found myself copying Harmonize twice (although the first time I did it I drew 3 lands and lost shortly afterwards).
Thornscape Battlemage is very good card advantage.
    Chameleon Blur won me games.
Seal of Primordium was useful, both the times it hit the table it stopped Aura-based removal targetting my Akroma.
Essence Warden is silly since on average it gained me 5 life and made them waste a 3cc removal spell on the 1drop.
Jaya Ballard owns limited, killing annoying things like Twisted Abomination, destroying U decks and once, blowing up for the final 6 damage.
