JW Experience in Auckland Regional (BR)

The turn out was less than I expected probably because the competition was quite high for the Auckland Regional 2007. Continue reading JW Experience in Auckland Regional (BR)…

Brief FNM report

May 19, 2007 on 2:06 pm | In Magic | 6 Comments | DarkSentinel

Ok, this is at Jawyei’s request, a brief battle report for FNM 18 May, Future-Sight constructed.

There were two dissapointments about the ‘tournament’, firstly it was not sanctioned because it allowed Future Sight cards (admittedly I was one of two people to run a FS card - Magus of the Vineyard in my case) , and secondly only six people played, so there weren’t any exciting prizes either (if 8 people had played the winner would have received a FS and a random Kamigawa booster). Somebody playtest this

February 4, 2007 on 10:45 pm | In Magic | 5 Comments | Sicopath

Inspired by opening 3 timbermares on prerelease saturday; here’s some MONOGREEN BURN.

I designed this deck after laying in bed for about 10 minutes and getting up at 4 in the morning and drafting a decklist. I haven’t changed a single card specified in that blur of half-assed stupor.

creatures

3 Llanowar Elves
4 Uktabi Drake
4 Ashcoat Bear
4 Scryb Ranger
4 Primal Forcemage
3 Timbermare

non-creatures

4 Giant Growth
4 Sprout
3 Seal of Primordium
3 Search for Tomorrow
2 Harmonize

lands

22 Forest

Yeah, this deck is built around the idea of turn 1 elf, turn 2 primal forcemage (Anyone up for an extremely unlikely 4 Uktabi drakes on turn 3?).
After that, it’s mass hasted green burn or EoT flash creatures for a free giant growth on your turn. You can say that this is pretty much like Mono-Green Aggro with less consistency and more “COMBAT MATH? FUCK THAT SHIT.”

Monochrome Standard, Part one: Red

Monochrome Planar Chaos Standard, Part one: Red
Introduction:
The type 2 tournament scene is dominated by fancy lands these days: shocklands, painlands, karoo lands, and the average deck has $150+ worth of land in it. For me this is extreme, and I dislike spending that much money on so few cards that just provide mana. Call me stingy, or poor. Anyway, this is going to be a brief series of articles on building decks that are monochrome. Monochrome is very interesting because you need to rely completely on the strengths and weaknesses of a particular colour, and, due to the absence of dual lands, it’s also a heck of a lot cheaper. For each article I will therefore look at two deck options: a more expensive deck that aims to be semi-competitive, and a budget deck which should be more fun to play (budget means we’ll try to stay under the $20 mark, roughly the price of a preconstructed deck). I’ll also have a brief look at some of the ideas Planar Chaos gives us.

Pink sleaves

January 20, 2007 on 8:24 pm | In Magic | 6 Comments | Jeremy Read

DarkSentinel was here

I went to the Planar Chaos prerelease today with Simon and Josh.

Jeremy’s R/G 40 card limited deck:

  • 8x Mountain
  • 7x Forest
  • (TS)
  • Goblin Skycutter
  • Lightning Axe
  • Firemaw Kavu
  • Coal Stoker
  • Browbeat
  • Bogardan Rager
  • Ghitu Firebreathing
  • (PC)
  • 2x Brute Force
  • Pyrohemia
  • Needlepeak Spider
  • Dead // Gone
  • Dust Corona
  • (TS)
  • Durkwood Baloth
  • Krosan Cloudscraper
  • Sporesower Thallid
  • Penumbra Spider
  • Æther Web
  • Gemhide Sliver
  • (PC)
  • Essence Warden
  • Giant Dustwasp
  • Utopia Vow
  • 2 Uktabi Drake
  • Evolution Charm

People seem to pick Blue/Black. I don’t know why, might be because they get flashy rares or something and build their entire decks around it, but they tend to be unable to support it with enough removal. Also nobody was running hard counterspells, regardless of whether they got them or not. For those who don’t know I went 4/1

Poor Man’s White Weenie

January 18, 2007 on 9:49 am | In Magic | 5 Comments | DarkSentinel

So White Weenie is fun. And if you have Savannah Lions, Soltari Priest, Paladin en-Vec and Ghostway (among others) it becomes really good. But. I don’t have any of those cards. I don’t even have Squire. So I would like to try something more interesting: White Weenie in TimeSpiral Standard (using no Rares):
